Sky Sign Launch
The following sequence of photos shows what happens when launching a 30 foot high aerial billboard.
Ground crew lays out the banner and ---
then attaches a 350 foot long towline from the banner to a set of 2 launch poles.
The towplane, flying at a speed of 80 mph and only 15 feet above the ground, then attempts to hook the towline stretched between the 2 launch poles with a 25 foot cable and grapple hook attached to the tail of the aircraft. This maneuver takes a bit of practice and a lot of experience to get correct. Launch poles and towline can be seen just below and in front of the towplane with the 2 white flags.
Occasionally the towplane fails to hook the towline and must fly around for another attempt. This is usually followed by laughter and rude comments directed at the pilot over the aircraft radio from his fellow pilots. Notice above that no towline is hooked to the grapple hook below the towplane.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After successfully hooking the towline with the grapple hook, The towplane then zooms up into the sky. Notice in the photo above, the towline is hooked to the grapple hook below the towplane.
_____________________________________________________________
The banner now will peel neatly off the ground if all goes well ---
and climbs into the sky
as it follows the towplane up.
The banner then flys off to do its advertising flight for the day.
